Frequently asked Questions
How does Kumon differ from other tutoring programs?
The Kumon method and Kumon materials are unique. Most tutoring programs tutor using school materials. Kumon has designed its own curriculum, which covers the parts of curriculum most needed for high school study. Students begin in the program according to their individual abilities, at a point where they can achieve good results. They advance through the program at their own pace, completing a small amount of work every day.

Is my child the right age for Kumon?
Children may enroll as early as preschool, and Kumon is attended by students throughout primary and secondary school. It’s always preferable to start young and begin developing skills early to get the greatest cumulative benefit.

Is Kumon an "enrichment" program, or a "remedial" program?
Kumon can help children who may be struggling and need to catch up, as well as those who are seeking enrichment. Our goal is for all students to begin studying above their school grade, and to always have opportunities to reach their full potential.

Why is Kumon such as effective complement to my child's schooling?
Schools must cover material according to age or grade, and classes must advance as a group. Needless to say, not all children grasp all concepts at the same pace. Kumon allows the individual needs and abilities of each child to govern his or her own progress. That’s why Kumon students can perform at 100% of their potential.

What kind of placement test will you give my child?
Kumon has developed its own placement tests for students enrolling in its programs. Their primary purpose is to show us where students will be most comfortable starting in the program. The math tests concentrate on assessing speed and accuracy with basic calculation skills, because a strong foundation in this area is crucial for success with all higher math. The reading tests concentrate on assessing basic reading, reading comprehension, and writing skills, for the same reasons.

My child is very active with sports, takes piano lessons, and has tons of homework. How would Kumon fit into this busy schedule?
Kumon recommends that you come to the Center twice a week for about 30-45 minutes per subject. Homework must be completed on the five days that students do not attend the Center, and will take around 10-20 minutes per subject. It's not a lot of time each day -- many students find it easiest to do it first thing in the morning, or before their regular homework. What is crucial is that it is done daily, so it is important that you are able to commit to this schedule -- if not, you will not see the results.

How long is the Kumon Program?
Kumon is a long term program rather than a quick fix. It takes most students approximately nine months to one year to catch up to their grade level, because we go back to ensure that they have a strong foundation first. The Center is open all year-long, and students should stay enrolled throughout the year to maintain the study routine that they first establish when they join.

My child needs help with math and reading. Can I enroll her in both subjects?
Students who study math and reading with Kumon benefit greatly by developing the two most needed skills for their future success. However, at the beginning, it is best to enroll a student in one subject only. This will allow her to develop a good Kumon routine and to fully experience the Kumon learning method. The first month allows us to get to know your child better and understand what motivates her and how to best plan the work to assure continued success. We generally recommend to add the second subject 2-3 months after initial enrollment.

Why haven't I heard more about Kumon?
Kumon has chosen to devote most of its resources to developing rather than promoting its programs. While Kumon has grown steadily in North America—largely by word-of-mouth—it has been a household name primarily in the Asian-American community.

Does Kumon offer preparation for standardized tests?
Kumon specializes in nurturing skills that improve all aspects of academic performance, including test-taking. Through daily timed assignments, students become thoroughly accustomed to working under test-taking conditions, developing key time management and problem-solving skills. Few students are as well prepared for major standardized exams like the SAT as long-term Kumon students.
